Only thing the tag rule maybe does is move certain players out a year putting a hold on the excessive 1 yr bids until the following year. That's just moving the yard line, not addressing the issue.
how bout something this simple. any player with a 1 yr expiring contract his next contract HAS TO BE more than 1 year in length. when kershaw+ comes up next fa period he has to be given more than 1 yr contract. that way we can keep 1 yr contracts, have mult contracts for top players, dont have to change our bidding process, and eat our cake too

What does your rule do for the anti-kershaws signed to 1 yr contracts? Say I wanna sign a Ben Zobrist to 1 year, but I cant because previous contract was 1 year. That doesnt sound too cool to me.

Don't like the idea of keeping track for former 1 yrs.
The franchise tag would be incentive to give at least 2 yrs so you could have option of franchising them. Its another approach at the trout/Kershaw annual 1 yr deal issue.
My prob w total contract is everyone will get 5 yr deals basically, so it will just create a different problem.
I thought you didn't like guys overbidding on 1 year contracts just to trade them and eat salary. This might help.
Although, I'm thinking I don't like it either.
I like 1 year contracts but not 20 million plus that gets traded in April. That throws the balance way off. I thought I came up with some ideas and don't remember if anyone responded. I will search for it and bump it up.

You talking bout these ideas?
How about your are not allowed to pay traded salary? Or if you can the team trading eats a future penalty, next year or multi years Teams must stay under the salary cup all years? (Toronto's idea I like it) More severe penalty releasing players (50-75% in future years)

Hembree rule is like 1 person a yr maybe. Just seems overly complicated to have to keep track of what their last contract was... OK I gotta give this guy 2 yrs when I bid but this guy is coming off a multi yr so I can give him 1 yr.l deal...
here is the list of big money 1 year contracts. if we arbitrarily start at 15mil there is only 7 players who next year must be given a multiple years contract. thats not hard to keep track of.
make 16mil the starting point and that drops to only 4 players.
Felix Hernandez----NEW YORK(11.0/1) Alex Colome--------MILWAUKEE(12.0/1) Nelson Cruz--------LOS ANGELES(12.1/1) Cole Hamels--------PITTSBURGH(14.0/1) ------------------------------------------ Jonathon Lucroy----LOS ANGELES(15.0/1) Dan Murphy---------MINNESOTA(15.3/1) Dee Gordon---------DETROIY(15.75/1) --- Arodis Chapman-----SAN DIEGO(17.2/1) Corey Kluber-------PITTSBURGH(19.6/1) Clayton Kershaw----KANSAS CITY(29.9/1) Mike Trout---------PHILADELPHIA(37.5/1)

I'm ok with the $15M threshold as that's 1/6 of our annual budget. That simple rule change would prevent a player like Kershaw getting bid up EVERY year and then traded for a king's ransom!
Even though I kind of liked the Franchise Tag idea, I dislike the large 1 yr contracts MUCH more. Put NYY down as supporting (nepotism) Uncle Chi's proposal!
Let's Keep It Simple Stupid n make up!!! Either that or make it ANY contract $20M or more MUST be longer than 1 yr...I'm ok w that as well!!!
