No you don't have to sign him now. This tracker only means that he is mlb eligible and must be signed at latest for next season. Or he gets dropped and becomes a free agent for the rest of us mutts

when a player reaches maj lg status you have until the end of the season to decide whether to keep and sign the player or release him into fa.

you can sign a minor guy at any time during the year, even if he hasnt as yet reached maj lg status. the problem then is if the player is demoted in real life, you still have to pay him.
