So someone explain to me now.
So KC has Sano for 1 minor league year. How does this play out assuming Sano stays with the big club. Does KC have the chance to sign him for 5 yrs at a minimum?

if he gets to 150 major league at bats then he signs him in offseason no problem. If he doesn't get the at bats then KC either lets him go back to the minor league free agent (MiLB) draft OR he can sign him to a major league deal, but he cannot put him on waivers or cut him. So if he doens't make it to 150 AB and he signs him for 5 yrs he must keep him on the active roster for all 5 yrs. Basically kinda like a rule 5 player you must tie your hands if you want to avoid losing them. Does that make sense?
SD I believe what minny is talking about is different than the normal situations as he is referring to sano being signed before he reaches 150 at bats and the risk you take for not letting him go to the milb draft.
Minny is exactly correct. This incident is rare where a player loses his minor years but does not archive the minimum ABs or IP. The rule was created to give an owner a chance to keep a stud player rather than lose him to unforeseen circumstances. But it will tie your hands, his must stay on your active roster until the player archives the minimum ABs or IP. Then normal rules apply.
SD is incorrect, you can not waiver the player. SD is correct on cutting a player.
This rule is based solely on ABs/IP. Sano can be signed to a major league contract now, thus losing a year of service come this October.
I believe the Blue Jays exercised this rule on a player this past year. Heath Hembree? Check the spreadsheet.
