Or should I just pack it in for this year? On a good day I can see the team pages for 7 or 8 team pages - on a bad day 3 or four. Quite often I can't even access my own team page. The summary page contains no waivers info and the team salaries are all effed up. Ever since the "upgrade" to the new and improved spreadsheet our league has lost any resemblance of an even playing field. Some people have information that the others do not have ready access to. It's a miracle that I've been able to stay in second place as these continuing problems have greatly curtailed my ability to negotiate trades effectively. In case you can't tell, I'm really frustrated with this situation - to the point where I am seriously considering moving on.
pretty strong words there milw. i dont recall you ever volunteering for anything. for ALL the things pitts has done for this league your comments are totally uncalled for. ever programmed boz? with a job and kids? he will correct it, he tried to improve the product. ive programmed b4 so i understand that things can go wrong with the best of intentions. you owe pitts an apology, plain and simple.
you boys can have my backup file. u'll have to update urself until the ssheets are fixed. just c/p into a notepad file. edit.. player name/orig $/yrs remaining

Wow hadn't had my coffee yet this am when i read & replied. I read the original msg and for some reason thought pitt posted it. I know your frustrated milw but try to be patient. If it seems like i complain about the spdsht i'm usually justaking sure issues are known not meant to criticize.
Also your grip like grim death on certain players is hindering making a deal in some cases more than the spreadsheet...jk

Milw you are a long time owner. Can you give pitt a chance to respond and see what we can do. I know its frustrating but you're still in the mix. Maybe listen to pitt and maybe sleep on it. Hate to lose you.
Post by ex-Pittsburgh Pirates on Jun 12, 2015 10:50:21 GMT -5
Ok. So now that I am sitting at my desk for my 8-5 job with a 30 min break until the next meeting, I feel compelled to give Milwaukee a response. I would have gladly responded earlier this morning except that I was busy getting 3 elementary school age kids ready for camp, then driving them 45 minutes to the camp, then driving the 30 minutes from camp to work. So deepest apologies for not responding when I first read the message or according to the Brewers expectation.
So, going on what...7 years now? Chicago and I have maintained the spreadsheets, year round, on an almost daily basis. This is on top of Chicago taking care of the message board here and both of us sharing in the Yahoo transactions. Honestly, it's a ridiculous amount of work, especially when you consider it's a free league comprised largely of internet strangers. It’s so much work that we started to burn out and a year or 2 ago decided to ask for help. A couple of owners, especially the Twins, stepped up to the plate to help with the Yahoo transactions. The help is greatly appreciated. Pretty sure the league would have fallen apart due to burn out without the help.
Anyway, a few weeks ago it became clear that I may have to take on more responsibilities for the league because Chicago was considering scaling back his participation. This is/was entirely within his rights and if he decides to do so, we should all chip in and get him a gold watch to thank him for the hundreds of hours he has put into the league. Regardless, this meant most or all of what Chicago does for the league would either fall on me, be delegated to another league member, or the league would fall apart. Rather than reflexively asking someone to pick up the slack, I decided to first try and take on the work myself. However, I knew I wouldn’t have time or would quickly burn out unless I could somehow make the job easier. Yahoo is what it is and there isn’t anything I can do about the asinine commissioner UI. The message board is entirely run by Chicago so I have no idea where to even begin. But the spreadsheet…that’s my baby and that is where I felt I could make things a bit easier to maintain.
First, let me tell you how things happen behind the scenes. A couple of times a day, mostly when I am at work and have a free 15 minutes, I will check the message board for transactions. Scan the trade folder, scan the drops/adds/waives folder, and on certain days take a look at the FA transactions. Let’s take a recent actual trade and see what used to take to update the spreadsheets. On June 3, the Orioles traded Carlos Gonzalez, Melky Cabrera, Mat Latos, JP Howell, K.Plawecki, N.Kingham, #2 pick, 2016 cash, 2017 cash, and CarGo’s salary to the Royals for Tazawa, Stanton, and Kimbrel. A big trade, but not unusual.
So, first thing we needed to do was to open up the Orioles sheet and go to the Major League roster tab. Now write down (because you can’t afford to mess up) all the contract information (sal/yrs/signed) for each player traded. Now delete those players. Now go to the Minor league tab. Same thing for the minor league players (write then delete). Now let’s open the Royals sheet. Do the same thing for the 3 major league players. Now, delete those 3 players and add all the major league player information from the Orioles that you wrote down. Now go to the minor league tab. Add the minor league players. Ok now we are done. Oops, not yet. There were draft picks. Go to the Orioles draft page and delete the picks. Now go to the Royals draft page and add the picks. Done. Oops, again…there was salary traded! Ok, go to the Orioles cash tab and add the 2016 and 2017 cash. The Orioles also owe CarGo’s 2015 salary, but the exact amount wasn’t written in the trade post, so now I have to go back to the Royals sheet, find out what CarGo’s salary is this year, write it down, then go back to the Orioles sheet and add it in. Now I go back to the Royals cash tab and repeat all that to record the cash the Royals are getting. Finally….FINALLY you are done with the sheets. But wait! What about the Yahoo transaction? And maybe that wasn’t the only trade posted since the last time you logged in! And maybe today is FA transaction day!!! Yada yada yada.
Now that you hopefully get the picture, you can understand why I might want to streamline this. So my idea, what I’ve wanted to do for a long time but was not yet possible in google sheets, was to store all the player information in a single sheet (create a player database) and have each team spreadsheet simply query from that sheet. Now, instead of going to multiple sheets and deleting/adding players/cash/picks, I could just go to 1 sheet and get it all done. For example, if 5 players are traded from the Orioles to the Royals, all I have to do is go to the database sheet, filter for the traded players, and swap the teams listed. This would almost completely eliminate mistakes and cut the work by about 3/4ths in both time and effort. Seems like a win/win. And, hopefully the sheets work as well or better than the old ones.
So that’s what I did. I spent about 20 hours of my own free time creating the new database spreadsheet and converting all the existing team sheets. Additionally, I wrote a few javascript programs to automate some team transactions. For example, when a player is cut, instead of deleting the player from the major league tab of the database and adding him to the cut player tab, I can simply select him and click a button and the script automatically does it. I am not a programmer in any way, so this was not an easy thing to do for me but I felt the time upfront was worth the effort. If you are still reading, thanks, because this is my favorite part coming up. Just a little bit longer I promise. Once the changes were complete, I rolled the new sheets out to the league in an announcement, asking everyone to please check it out and provide any input or suggestions and to let me know if there was any trouble. A couple of owners gave some suggestions. After a couple of weeks, there were a few scattered complaints that sometimes a sheet wouldn’t load. I looked into it, but the problems seemed intermittent or limited to mobile, and I was planning on doing a bit more troubleshooting but it honestly seemed like the problems were temporary and I wasn’t really able to reproduce the problem myself. Still, my goal all along with the sheets was to provide a better service to the league. If the new design wasn’t workable I certainly am willing to go back to the old sheets or try something else new. That was the whole reason I solicited opinions and feedback, which I feel like I responded to in a timely manner.
And then we come to today. I log in and read the Brewers post above in which he has the audacity to come in here, have a tantrum that the spreadsheets aren’t up to his expectations, threaten me and the league, and do all of that DESPITE NEVER ONCE BEFORE LETTING ME KNOW THAT HE WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THE SHEETS. Seriously, the first time I find out that the sheets aren’t working for the Brewers is when he comes in here and threatens me that I need to fix them or else he’s quitting.
I really don’t know what to say about it. I imagine it is obvious to everyone else in the league how out of line the Brewers is so I don’t really feel the need to defend myself. Based on the level of maturity the Brewers displays, it would be futile to argue with him or try to convince him why he is out of line. I’ve written these 1500 words so that everyone can see a bit of what goes on behind the scenes. Maybe you care, maybe you don’t. Either way is fine! I do all that work because I enjoy the league. I’m not getting paid but I’m not being forced to do it either. If I stop enjoying the league, I will stop putting in the effort. If you don’t enjoy it, then by all means let me know and we’ll find a replacement. I’m hoping all of you enjoy it as well. But you shouldn’t act as if I, or Chicago, or anyone else in this league OWES you something. I don’t owe you jack-spit. This is a free league. You aren’t doing me any favors by playing in my free league. You haven’t paid for the privilege. This especially goes for anyone who does not contribute to running the league. The Brewers has been around for years and has never, not once, volunteered any time or effort into helping out. If all you want to do is consume the services of the commissioners then have tantrums when they don’t meet expectations without giving us any warning that you aren’t satisfied with something, then please leave. Why would you be in a league if you don’t enjoy it? We won’t give a second thought to having to find another owner. If you do enjoy the league, then great! Stick around! Suggestions for making the league better are ALWAYS appreciated.
So thanks for reading this book. I hope we have a fun rest of the season. If the spreadsheets are irreparably broken, then I’m sure I’ll fix it at some point. Right now, you can understand I’m not feeling too enthused about putting any time into them as threats or demands on my free time generally don’t make me enthused or motivated to fix them. Right now, I’ll get to it when I get to it. And I am truly sorry if they are not working for you.

Just an FYI to the league who may be following this. Milwaukee has gone in and benched all of his players in Yahoo I assume as part of his spreadsheet tantrum. In response I am forced to lock his team and will be running his lineup (with help from Chicago). I'm not interested in all the drama, so I apologize that we have to take that step and hope that you trust us to run his lineup as if it were our own. We'll keep an eye on each other anyway.
CRAPP!!!! DOUBLE CRAPP!!! looks like i gave up too soon. eventually milw will fall in the standings and chi, kc, la are next in line. here i come balt, start shaking in your boots.
I am just as shocked as anyone else reading this. I certainly appreciate all the work Pitts and Chi contribute to this league. Not sure what exactly Milw is talking about or experiencing. Since the "upgrade" I have had no issues with the spreadsheets. Actually I find the spreadsheets to be more responsive and easier to navigate. Sucks to lose a long time owner but seriously.... WTF just happened here???

Honestly I have no idea what happened either. As far as I knew there were one or two owners having occasional problems. I certainly never heard from Milwaukee before today that he was having any sort of issue.
