read an article today about konerko and looked up his stats. shocked. then looked at jim rice stats(HOF) here they are:
both 16 years rice ......avg=.298 hr=382 rbi=1451 ab=8225 obp=.352 slg=.502 ops=.854 konerko avg=.283 hr-422 rbi=1336 ab=7718 .obp=.359 .slg=499 ops=.858 about as even as can be at this stage. i better go out and get paulie's autograph b4 it gets too expensive.
I think most people would disagree with Rice being in the Hall. Didn't he end up making it in his last year of eligibility? Basically the "no one else on this ballot is as qualified so I guess we send him this time" vote. If we are using Rice as the example then Konerko certainly belongs.
Agree with Pitts you can't compare eras. With that said, I do think Rice is an HOFer. When I started following baseball in the late 70s I considered Rice the best hitter in the game. When all other power hitters had low averages, Rice was always around .300. A real good hitter who was never in the spotlight. Played in a time when strikes were called strikes, no steroids, ballparks were fair. I never understood why he never got much credit.
As for Konerko, I don't think he's a HOFer. Why, just the eye test, I just don't see this guy as a dominating player in today's game over his career. Played in an era of baseball where everyone put up numbers and could not distance himself from other similar players.
Pitts and I agree on Konerko what about Rice? Does his get your vote or your ticket?
C Johnny Bench 1B Willie Statgell 2B Rod Carew SS Dave Concepcion 3B Mike Schmidt OF Pete Rose OF Reggie Jackson OF Lou Brock Runner Up OF is Jim Rice and he only played in a half the decade.
Rice played in a dead ball area while Konerko has played in the era of steroids,.smaller parks and livelier balls. When I look at a Hall of Gamer I look for someone that I.feel made there mark on the game. While Konerko has had a nice long career its not HOF worthy. He's never won and MVP. Albeit he is has always been a popular.player the MVP thing for me separates the men from the boys.
I believe Rice is due to the fact he was such a force. Other teams feared him. He was a league MVP and was always considered one of the top 3-4 players of his day. Konerko maybe have been one of the top HR hitters of his day but not a top player.

rice is a lower tier hall of famer...but i have no problem with him being in. plenty of black ink on the back of his baseball card...he faded too quick, was a product of his ballpark, and was a zero on defense. those are the reasons insay he was a lower tier hall of famer.
by the way...the 1980s are way underrepresented in the hof.
all i hear is that bagwell should be inducted. look at the stats and compare the 2. very compable. if bagwell goes then so does konerko. basically same time period, same era. and biggio claim to fame is due to longevity.

I am not a big historical stats guy but also do not think of Konerko as hall of fame material. Admittedly he gets docked in my mind for playing for the White Sox. I think they should make an exception for my childhood hero myself... Kent Hrbek. What he lacked in stats he has more than made up for in charity softball long bombs, commercials selling air conditioners, and fishing show appearances. I taught myself to hit leftie specifically because that's how Hrbek did it.
If Konerko's career were to end today, I do not think he would be a hall of famer. But if he puts up another year or two like last year it would be difficult not to vote him in.
