I can't believe we have gone this long without coming up with something on this front, but we really really really need a trade deadline. It would suck if a championship came down to a 'last week' trade.
FWIW, I promise I'm done dealing this year. But there is nothing stopping someone in the future from pulling off some kind of last day deal to win a close category.
My proposal is that after August 31, you can only trade with someone adjacent to you in the standings.
that would eliminate a 'bunch of fun' by not being able to trade. teams are trying to improve year-round. expiring contract players bring a bundle back from contending teams. if it comes down to a last week trade (philly and his verlander are you listening?) then it does. i say we dont need to change it.
Pitts is right, we DO need a trade deadline but i think august 31 is too far out for a league that sets lineups daily. chicago also has a good point that teams are still building for the future and some teams my not think they are in the race and then get hot. basically we want to eliminate a trade that can be calculated from the standing in 1 move, like wins.
i've been offered decent deals from both pittsburgh & chicago for my free agent studs but have turned them both down. i don't think it's fair to trade a stud this late in the season.
i suggest at least 2 weeks out from the end of the season a trade deadline.

im not married to any proposal right now...i was just throwing one out there to get the conversation started. you can sum up my thoughts this way:
1. i am always in favor of more trading, not less trading 2. we need a trade deadline
the scenario i am trying to avoid is the hypothetical scenario where 2 teams are battling for a single category (especially wins, saves, holds) and it comes down to the last day of the year tied, and one of the owners pulls off a bunch of deals on the last day to vulture the category. all currently legal and if it happens, i wouldnt cry foul. but it just seems unseemly.
obviously, nothing would go into effect this year.
even if we added another stat cat, as discussed earlier, if its this close again in the future it doesnt matter. managers will chase whatever stat cats they need to win. wasnt it close last year between tor and minn? i havent looked back at the trading history but i remember(i think) both teams making plenty of trades to win. why inhibit it? pitts, i'm getting the feeling that you're a republicant.

i just puts too much power into the hands of an owner who is out of the running. someone running 10th right now could have as much to say about the league championship as the contenders, by merely flipping an end of contract pitcher for another end of contract guy. or a 5th rounder. or 100k in cash. you get the idea. i think it invites collusion, or the appearance of collusion.
if you are referring to the deal with toronto, i needed to trade back 2 expiring contracts for roster space. longoria and votto are not slugs and i wasnt going to put them up for auction b4 their time. there was no collusion, just part of the deal. next season i have several players w/ exp contracts. you better believe i will attempt to trade them...at whatever point in the season if i'm out of contention. there's no collusion in that. i'm against a deadline.

I am not opposed to a trade deadline, I think September 1 would be a good date. Also, I would suggest that any player dropped during the last month of the season would not be eligible to be claimed during the silent bidding. It ensures that the top players will be available during the auction.
I think we should have a trade deadline for mlb eligible players. Maybe follow MLB trade deadlines, the waiver - trade dealine. Then after our season ends, trading opens back up
a whole month? i guarantee you guys will be screaming at this point next year as to how boring it is. i might back a rule stating that if you trade for an expiring contract then you cant give one back in return starting in september. i might even agree to a 'last week' trading deadline.

I just looked back at the end of season trades from last year and there was only one trade made by Minnesota and myself that involved a player and a second trade that was a swap of draft choices. I made that trade with Chicago to acquire Dempster. It was made on Sept.27 and I got one start from him and I believe his strike outs gave me the category win and the overall win. Based upon my review of history, I cannot be a hipocrate. I would oppose a trade deadline. Although it was only one trade in the final month it was the last week and it did help me win a category.

what about a 2 weeks before end of season trading deadline? A week seems short to me, but a month seems long. When I made a last second deal it wasn't illegal at the time so it wasn't cheating (Mark McGwire defense).
For my part I am against a rule not allowing people to cut anyone anytime they see fit. There is plenty of talent available in the offseason, and I think it is fun when someone suddenly cuts a big name and we all get to panic and see how much he will go for. I wish we could still cut someone on a final year deal in season and bid on them to resign long term, but that train has sailed...

Just catching back up with this thread. SOrry if you thought I was complaining about any trades that have been made this year. I wasn't...not 1 bit. I have zero problem with any of those trades. This all about what could happen in the future, not about anything that has happened in the past.
I think I'm in favor of a 2 week deadline. I agree that Sept 1 is too far away. I like trading more than anyone else.
Also, Phillies had a good idea...I'd be in favor of a rule that says if a 'free agent to be' gets dropped at the end of the season, you can only blind bid on him for a 1 year contract. Guys like Carlos GOnzalez and Brian McCann should be available to everyone. (Sorry I had to cut Carlos....I really needed the roster space.)
BUMP, I could have traded Verlander or King Felix the last week of the season and did not think it was an acceptable practice. I won't be taking one for the league anymore, it would suck to lose the league on the last day of the season because of a stuipd trade but if that's what the majority want, that could happen.
