you other managers had better chime in with your opinions on this transaction 'cause scutaro is in pitts starting lineup for tonight. once the stats are added there's no subtracting them.

his game goes off at 10pm EST. so we have until then to get league opinion.
fwiw, back in may(?) when i voluntarily reversed the cano trade, that reversal meant that i was without an active 2b. i immediately assigned myself darwin barney to bring my lineup into compliance. nobody complained then.
twice this year, i added a total of 4 players to old-NY...once on a monday and once on a tuesday. (non-bid days). both times i granted him a grace period which he ignored.
there have been a handful of other times i have pm'd owners about their lineups and they have asserted that they would make a bid so i gave them the grace period. the grace period is for the benefit of the owner. maybe i shouldnt have done that for others...but it is not to my benefit.
so i dont think i am treating my team with any kind of favoritism.

ive turned league control over to chicago. i leave it up to him to do with scutaro whatever he feels is right. it doesnt matter to me either way, so don't be afraid to release him. nobody else has weighed in, so i have no idea what the league thinks and cant act unilaterally when it involves my team.
I really am not concerned one way or another. .It isnt like scutaro is a super star. Scutaro probably should not have been assigned as pitt did cut him on a bid day. Bonifaccio was placed on the dl afterwards, which surprised me, as i have him in a different league. To me, it's just nitpicking. Pittsburgh should have an open slot until Sunday's blind bid

just to make it clear...i did not get scutaro through the bid process. i got him through the rule that says the commish will assign a player if you cant field a lineup. just want to make that clear. no bidding was involved so the fact that this happened on a bid day was irrelevant.

I think that he should have to wait for the next FA bidding period. By asking to have someone appointed prevents anyone else who may have wanted to bid on Scutaro to lose out on him. When I traded Beltre, I was without a 3B and I had until the next FA bidding to replace him. The circumstances are unfortunate, but being able to appoint a replacement before a FA bidding period passes is wrong.

perhaps i am misunderstanding the problem.
what if the next highest ranking SS was willie bloomquist or someone who had been available for weeks? would you have had a problem with me assigning that guy to my team today? or would i have had to wait for a bid period for even him? is the problem that scutaro was not available for bidding? it was a very unusual circumstance/coincidence that the very guy who should rightly be assigned was just cut the same day. is that the issue? i thought the issue was that i assigned ANY player too quickly. how long should i wait until i have to assign myself the next highest ranking guy? why do i get the feeling that if the next highest ranking guy was a total piece of crap nobody would care? that seems like a double standard being held against me, while i am being accused of having a double standard to favor myself.
imagine this scenario...the next highest ranking guy was some stinkpot AND i didnt have a roster space to add a player? does anyone NOT think chicago would be in here asking 'when will the pirates fix his lineup violation and oh by the way, who are you going to cut'?
these are things you have to think about when you are the commish. i have to hold myself to the letter of the law, which is what i thought i was doing. i try to give others some reasonable leeway. but when applying the law to yourself, you have to go by the book, even if it helps or hurts you. if i had to cut someone for a ss, i would have. i dont want to play in a league where people wonder if the commish will hold himself to the letter of the law. those leagues suck and dont last.
in any event, i gladly give the decision over to chicago/the league. i wont complain about the decision no matter what is decided. i will complain and continue to explain if i think there are misconceptions about what i did or why i did it. dont insinuate i am bending the rule or taking advantage of my power for my own benefit. i gladly cede all power from here on out.

Just catching up. I think it should be best available but not someone just cut who has not had the chance to be bid on. Say i release hrbek cuz he is a rental and i need the room for a young guy. You really want hrbek to helpyou win the ship this yr. You cut your 1b and say lineup violation. Assign me hrbek!
ya'll are getting hung-up on 'violation'. assigning a player was/is only used on deadbeat managers. we dont have any right now. if you need a replacement because of a player DL'd, you go thru the silent bidding process. its been that way for the last 4 years w/o any controversey.

ive given warnings to owners who i dont consider to be deadbeats. if it is a rule you want to subjectively apply to people you consider deadbeats, that is your prerogative. ive got no problem with your interpretation of the rule.
also, i can support modifying the rule that says you have to be given a formal warning and then wait until the next bid period before getting an assignment. that's not in the rule now. but if you want to enforce it that way, that is ok.
basically, whatever you want to do going forward is ok with me. i dont really have an opinion.
I think the rule needs to be clarified. Next time it could be the hot international player or out-of-nowhere stud who turns eligible just as a team loses a certain position.

one thing should be made clear....you cannot take advantage of the rule by cutting a guy in order to create an illegal lineup. nobody would be allowed to do that. or at least wouldnt have been when i was commish. i think somebody mentioned that as a possibility. i dont want people to think that is what i have done here.
