HUGE NEWS FROM THE SPORTSDESK
Johan Santana is on the move again
In a surprise move, Baltimore and San Diego has come to terms on an extremely surprising trade that will send former Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana to the Padres. Santana is out for the season but could be a game changer once again next season.
The details of the trade are as follows. San Diego will send closers Trevor Hoffman and David Aardsma along with prospects Ryan Flaherty and Carlos Triunfel to Baltimore. In return, the Padres will acquire an ace in Johan Santana as well as infield prospect Tyler Ladendorf from Baltimore.
When asked, the GM of each team had a different reason for completing the trade...
Andy MacPhail, general manager of the Orioles stated "although we are going to miss seeing Santana in the clubhouse, it was best for the team to complete the trade. We love to acquire young talent. We also get some veterans such as Hoffman to help close out games. When you also consider the money being saved by trading Santana, we could be a real player in the offseason."
On the other side, Padres GM Kevin Towers was ecstatic. "You mean they fell for that trade! Wow they are idiots! Err, I mean we are very happy that Baltimore was willing to work with us on this deal. We are ecstatic that we have acquired Santana. We now have a very real opportunity to make a run next season. I would like to wish Hoffman and the guys the best of luck in Baltimore."
This trade comes after a rash of moves by the Orioles who are in the midst of a championship run. The moves include acquiring veteran starter Derek Lowe, closer Mike MacDougal, and prospects Will Inman and Shooter Hunt.
It has been reported that to complete the deal, the Orioles will send Carlos Gonzalez back to waivers. Also, the Orioles have agreed to pay $5m of Santana's salary for both this and next season.
