So, I got to hang out with Josiah Gray tonight. What a cool kid.
A small convoy of people, myself included, drove down to Bowie, MD to see Ryan Murphy make his first AA start today for the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Ryan got shelled. But, his good friend Josiah Gray also came out to watch him pitch, and ended up watching the whole game with us.
Josiah grew up in New Rochelle, not too far from the boogie-down Bronx, where he grew up a big Yankees fan. He mentioned that he badly wants to pitch in Yankee Stadium, something he has not yet gotten the opportunity to do. I mentioned that we could arrange a “Josiah cheering section” if he ever gets the chance to start at Yankee stadium. Josiah matter of factly stated to let him know how many of us would come and he would get us tickets to the game.
As I sit here exhausted, eyes needing to close, and try to digest my long, exciting day, I realize that I didn’t even get a single picture with him, let alone an autograph. There were a couple of random people who came up politely and asked for autographs, of which he was super polite and accommodating. And, those who know me know that I don’t miss opportunities for graphing and that I’m always prepared. Tonight, I just didn’t want to be “that guy”. I’m disappointed that I don’t have some new material for my personal collection, but I can’t wait to hang out with him again in the future. Something tells me that this won’t be the last time I see him!
He’s really good friends with Ryan Murphy and very familiar with his family. My son is best friends with Ryan and I’m an old coach. I was unaware the connection was so strong, but had heard his name mentioned in circles several times. They went to college together and remain good friends. I was impressed how humble he spoke. He talked about the craft of pitching and had good conversations about the game with us baseball lovers. He was a polite, well spoken young man.
